Christine Debrosky has the rare ability to capture the transient effects of natural light, transforming a seemingly mundane corner of our world into something extraordinary. Born in Port Ewen, NY, her earliest art influences were beautifully illustrated children’s books. She loved the colors, the worlds of fantasy, and the feeling of being able to walk right into the pictures.
Nature bathed in light is a favorite subject. While a sense of place is important to Debrosky, more so are season, time of day, and the “intoxicating array of color, shape and form.” Ordinary, everyday vistas are transformed by sunlight and shadow to become places of beauty and tranquility. Working in pastel, and oil with its rich, pure pigments, keeps Debrosky excited about the inherent beauty and challenge unique to the medium. Painting, communing and gathering reference material outdoors is a spiritually rejuvenating experience for Debrosky.
Debrosky’s contemporary impressionist paintings have been selected for, and honored with awards in numerous regional, national and international exhibitions. In addition, her pastels have been featured in The Best of Pastels and Landscape Inspirations (Quarry Books, Rockport Publishers), and in the November 2003 issue of American Artist.
Having lectured and demonstrated for many arts organizations and societies, Debrosky is on the faculty of the Woodstock School of Art. Recently, her teaching has taken her to the Tuscany region of Italy. But whether roaming her native landscape or more far-flung locales for inspiration, a joyous celebration of the natural world is at the core of Debrosky’s work.
